Animal Registration
All pet cats and dogs must be microchipped and registered for life, as required by NSW law.
Microchipping & Registration for Cats and Dogs
In New South Wales, all pet cats and dogs must be permanently identified with a microchip and registered for life.
This is required under the Companion Animals Act 1998 and helps reunite lost pets with their owners.
Key points at a glance
- All cats and dogs must be microchipped by 12 weeks of age or before transfer of ownership (whichever happens first).
- All cats and dogs must be lifetime registered after microchipping.
- Dogs not desexed by 6 months attract an additional one-off registration fee.
- Cats not desexed by 4 months, restricted dog breeds and dangerous dogs require an Annual Permit.
Permanent Identification (Microchipping)
Cats and dogs must be microchipped by 12 weeks of age.
Microchipping is a quick, safe procedure (about the size of a grain of rice) implanted between the shoulders and linked to your contact details.
You can arrange microchipping with your local vet or at the Glenfield Road Animal Shelter.
Keep your contact details up to date so lost pets can be returned to you.

Lifetime Registration
After microchipping, complete lifetime registration (a one-time payment supporting community animal management services).
Important: Microchipping and lifetime registration are separate processes with separate fees — both are required.
